“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

– Aboriginal Woman

When I say, “About US,” I mean you and me. US is created as we move throughout this world we share. Growing up on the mainland, I was taught the lessons needed to survive in “the real world.” Slogans such as, “money doesn’t grow on trees” and “you can’t get something for nothing” were common in my household. I had my first paper route in the fourth grade, sold Avon door to door at 13, and never stopped working. I believed I would find happiness in accomplishment and success. I began traveling at the age of 16. It started in Europe, where most countries looked about the same as America. I marveled at the sites and reveled in my new found independence. As I got older/bolder, I began to travel to countries that were not the same as mine — third world countries. I was astounded to realize that people were much the same as you and me, but only had different ways of expressing themselves. We all ate, we all worked, we all loved, and we all suffered. I was surprised to realize that happiness was not dependent on what was possessed and earned but simply existed in some, and was lacking in others. It opened my eyes to the simplicity of life. I was gratified to recognize that happiness lies in what we appreciate and share; not in what we possess.
